Request Registration Permission & Specialized Admissions
The Shasta College Heavy Equipment Program features courses with specialized admissions requirements, including industry standard drug and alcohol testing. These are requirements students must complete in order to participate in the class. They include, but are not limited to, providing required paperwork, completing required orientations and/or policy reviews, and submitting to drug and alcohol testing as directed by the program. Requirements may vary by course type.
General Admissions Requirements
To enroll in our courses, students must have a Shasta College Student ID and access to the Shasta College portal. You can view the steps to enrollment for more information on how to become a student, and you can view videos and walkthrough guides for the Shasta College portal. If you were a student in the past, but have not taken a class in two semesters (roughly one year), then you will need to complete the steps to enrollment again to make sure your account is up to date.
Specialized Admissions Requirements
Operating Courses
(CONS 46, CONS 47 CONS 55A-D, CONS 148, AGNR 102, AGNR 103, and AGNR 104 as of Spring 2023)
These courses involve specialized admissions requirements including drug and alcohol testing. To register for one or more of these courses, you must request conditional registration permission at this link: Heavy Equipment Program Intake Form (Dynamic Forms). You will need an active Shasta College Student ID and access to the Shasta College portal to complete the form.
Please Note: In addition to other controlled substances, Marijuana/THC will disqualify students from participating in operating courses. Only drug and alcohol tests taken as directed by the program at the program's testing provider will be accepted. CBD products may contain enough THC to produce positive drug tests. For more information see below for Frequently Asked Questions regarding drug testing.
Truck Driving
(CONS 140B as of Spring 2023)
Students must have a valid California Commercial Leaner's Permit and fulfill DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements. To register for this course, request conditional registration permission at this link: Heavy Equipment Program Intake Form (Dynamic Forms). You will need an active Shasta College Student ID and access to the Shasta College portal to complete the form.
Please Note: CONS-140B drive time availability is limited and meeting the minimum drive time required for the Entry Level Driver Training Requirements will require additional drive time scheduled outside of listed lab time. Students must demonstrate certain competencies with vehicle inspections, air brakes, and backing before being allowed to participate in on-road driving. In addition to other controlled substances, Marijuana/THC will disqualify students from participating in truck driving courses. CBD products may contain enough THC to produce positive drug tests. Only drug and alcohol tests taken as directed by the program at the program's testing provider will be accepted. Drug and alcohol testing for this course will be reported to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association National Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse per federal requirements.
Shasta College is a Registered Training Provider for the Entry Level Driver Training Requirements. For more information contact our program, see below for frequently asked questions regarding drug testing, and visit our truck driving page for more information on our truck driving classes.
If you plan on taking both classes, you must fill out both forms.
Drug and Alcohol Testing FAQs
Courses involving the operation of heavy equipment and/or vehicles fall under our Student Drug and Alcohol Testing Policies. Students must complete additional admissions requirements in order to participate in these courses. If you have a Shasta College Student ID, you can complete a program intake form to request registration permission for courses requiring drug tests. If you do not have a Shasta College Student ID, you can complete a Request for Information.
Our drug and alcohol testing policy ensures the safety of our students and classes, and it prepares our students to meet the expectations of their future workplace. Drug and alcohol testing is a standard practice in industries involving heavy machinery and truck-driving. By implementing pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing, our program educates students in workplace expectations involving controlled substances and ensures they are equipped to meet those standards.
Marijuana use is not allowed in the program. Since Shasta College adheres to federal level drug and alcohol testing requirements, marijuana/THC use will disqualify students from participating in both operating and truck driving courses requiring drug tests. No provisions in either course type are made for medical marijuana. Please note that CBD products may contain high enough levels of THC to produce positive drug tests. While CBD should be manufactured in such a way that THC should be low enough to have little to no buildup, regulation is not strict enough to verify THC levels in individual CBD products. As a result, the Department of Transportation has published a notice advising safety-sensitive employees on the dangers and possible consequences of using CBD products, including the possibility of positive drug tests. More information on CBD and THC is available from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Enrollment in the Shasta College Student Drug and Alcohol testing costs $135 cash or $145 credit/debit card. Payment is due at the drug testing appointment. This payment will cover student participation in testing for a year. If a student plans on participating in operating courses after their test has expired, they will need to renew their drug test and pay again.
Shasta College works with a local business in Redding to test our students. In order to prevent confusion, students are given specific details at the program orientation prior to the start of each semester. If you are coming from out of the area, you can contact the heavy equipment program at heavyequipment@shastacollege.edu for more information about drug testing locations.
Testing date varies per class. Operating classes with non-DOT testing will have drug tests for new or renewing students available on the first day of class. Truck driving classes will allow students to schedule appointments once they have completed the required documentation packet and are able to meet specific DOT requirements. More information will be made available once you have registered for class.
Drug tests taken for other reasons and/or at other providers will not satisfy the special admission requirements programs.
If you were previously enrolled in operating courses and your drug test has expired, complete a program intake form for conditional registration permission and to start your renewal process. If it has been more than two semesters since you have taken a class at Shasta College, be sure to complete the steps to enrollment again to update your profile. You can also view videos and walkthrough guides for the Shasta College portal to refresh your memory.
