What to do when you’re on a waitlist
For more information including video tutorials, please visit MyShasta for Students. You can also view Student Wait List Instructions - General (PDF).
What is a waitlist?
A waitlist starts when a class is full to prioritize enrollment when seats become available. This allows students to wait in line for courses that are full. Students may add themselves to a waitlist until its scheduled start date. If the course has already started, you can contact your instructor to ask for an add authorization into the course.
*If you receive an add authorization from the instructor after census for that course has passed, you will also need to complete a late add form to apply to enroll in the course.
- Log in to the MyShasta student menu and click ‘search and register for courses’.
- Enter in the criteria to search for and click ‘Search’.
- A list of sections that meet the search criteria will display. If the course you’ve picked is waitlisted, you will see an alert that says “this section has a waitlist.” Click on the blue ‘add’ button to add this section to your planned schedule.
- Open the “Plan and Schedule” tool on your MyShasta and select the blue ‘waitlist’ button to add yourself to the waitlist.
If the course has already started, you cannot add to the waitlist and will need to ask your instructor for an Add Authorization.
In-Person Courses
If you are waitlisted in a class that has in-person class meeting times, make sure you attend those in-person meetings and identify yourself to your instructor as a student on the waitlist who would like an Add Authorization so you can officially enroll.
Online Courses
If you are on the waitlist for an online course or a hybrid/face-to-face course with an online component, you will not be able to access the online class nor any online component of your face-to-face course in Canvas until you are enrolled in the class.
Auto Enroll*
Automated enrollment begins with the first student on the waitlist. If a spot becomes available in the course, the first student on the waitlist will be automatically enrolled into the course. A confirmation email will be sent and payment is due by midnight of the day you are enrolled. The auto-enroll feature is no longer active after the first day of class - you will remain on the waitlist unless you have been granted an add authorization from the instructor.
*You will not be auto enrolled if you have not completed prerequisites, owe a debt to the college, course schedule conflicts, have reached maximum allowable units.
Instructor Add Authorization
If you are on a waitlist you can contact your instructor asking for permission to add the course. Once the instructor has given an add authorization, you may add the course on the first day until census day by clicking on the blue banner on your plan and schedule page.
If you are waitlisted for a course that you don’t intend to enroll, it is the student’s responsibility to drop from the course. If you do not drop it, you may be enrolled and be responsible for enrollment fees.
Visit the ‘Plan & Schedule’ page on your MyShasta and select “drop waitlist” that appears next to the waitlisted course you wish to remove.
Check for alternative section numbers
Some courses may have multiple offerings with different locations, times, instructors. Browse through different courses with the same title to view all available options.
Have a backup course
In the event you are unable to enroll into your actively waitlist course, you can use your educational plan to help find a different course to take in its place. (You will still need to complete both courses, this just swaps the order you are taking them.)
Be Patient
Enrollment status can change frequently as other students rearrange their schedules. If you choose to wait a couple of weeks after the semester has started, it is important you attend the course you are waitlisted for so you aren’t behind if you are accepted to the waitlist.
